In the study, researchers surveyed more than 2,500 mothers about their sex lives with the man who fathered their first child. Although the women who took the pill were less into sex than other women, they were also more satisfied by their partner’s financial stability.

On the other hand, it’s important to remember that every woman is different and hormones are influencing just one part of a complex set of attributes that she finds attractive, says Men’s Health sex advisor Debby Herbenick, Ph.D. “It’s not clear whether the manly guy or the family man are ultimately better partners for women, and it probably depends on the woman herself,” Herbenick says.

Which is to say, this is no reason for any woman to stop taking her birth control pills. But Herbenick explains that women on hormone-based contraceptives, which typically include estrogen and progesterone, are generally less sensitive to all sorts of environmental cues, including sexual ones. At the same time, the sex in almost any relationship can grow stale once the initial spark has worn off.

Our advice: Join a casual sports league together playing something like kickball, ultimate Frisbee, or flag football. “Seeing her guy be more masculine and do something they’re good at, whether its sports or not, is a turn-on for most women,” Herbenick says. “Plus she’ll feel active and fit by playing with you, which might head off any issues she has with her body.” What’s more, the competition and physical activity boosts testosterone, which helps increase sex drive in women and might be tamped down by the estrogen in her pill.
